The air is getting cooler, colorful leaves are blanketing my driveway, and pumpkin spiced stuff is everywhere, which means it must be that time of the year…time for children’s author Susanna Leonard Hill’s 6th annual Halloweensie contest.
I absolutely, positively, love this contest. It is so much fun trying to come up with my own Halloweensie story, and equally as fun reading everybody else’s.
If you want to submit a story of your own or read all the fabulous entries, head on over here, and prepare to be delighted by a cauldron of creativity.
Here are the rules: The Contest: write a 100 word Halloween story appropriate for children (title not included in the 100 words), using the words spider, ghost, and moon. Your story can be scary, funny or anything in between, poetry or prose, but it will only count for the contest if it includes those 3 words and is 100 words (you can go under, but not over!) Get it? Halloweensie – because it’s not very long and it’s for little people.
And now for my entry, I hope you enjoy it!
THE HAIRY SCARY SPIDER (64 words)
The Hairy Scary Spider crawled up the old tree bark
to spin her webs,
and catch her prey
in nights enduring dark.
Down crawled Hairy Scary on her silver, spindled thread,
to check her web
that glowed beneath
the full moons waning head.
Her lacework held a tasty meal
she couldn’t wait to eat,
when out popped ghost’s amorphous corpse
howling, “Trick or Treat!”
Fun story with just the right spookiness for little ones. Good luck with the contest!

Nice twist on the traditional rhyme, Jean! Love that her name is Hairy Scary 🙂 And love the line “Down crawled Hairy Scary on her silver, spindled thread,” – so visual! And I bet Hairy Scary was surprised when Ghost turned up! Thanks so much for joining in the Halloweensie fun!
